Boarding on Unconventional Terrain
Aaaaaaand we’re back baby! Another week of T.O. with plenty more to come. Welcome to the Travel Onist, where I sift through a painstaking amount of content and travel the world (poor me) to bring you the best travel experiences on the planet - and maybe even beyond, since, you know, recreational space travel is now a thing. What a crazy world we live in, huh?
By the way, if you like what you’ve seen from me so far, go ahead and share T.O. with anyone you think may enjoy it using this link riiiiiiiiight here! That’s right, don’t be selfish, share the love baby!
And if you don’t like what you’ve seen so far (sigh 😔) it’s ok, I’ll just never forgive you.
Here’s what’s on the itinerary today:
A Swedish hotel in the trees
A better form of tapas
Boarding on unconventional terrain
A list of places to travel to in 2023
Stay
This is simply one of the most ridiculous hotels I’ve ever seen. Take a gander at some of the video tours on the website. With 8 completely unique standalone rooms and a guesthouse, I think it is fair to say this hotel has something for everyone (that is, anyone capable of getting to Harad, Sweden). Ridiculous? Yeah, I thought so too. Expensive? You bet your sweet cheeks it is. But hey, my job is to bring you the most unique travel experiences and I’d say this checks the box. So don’t hate the player, hate the game 😎.
Eat, Drink, and Be Merry
Pintxos Crawl in San Sebastián, Spain
Mostly overshadowed by its more popular neighbors France and Italy, Spain’s food scene is one of the best in the world. And San Sebastian, located in northern Spain’s Basque country, might just be the star of the show.
DID YOU KNOW that San Sebastian has the highest concentration of Michelin stars per square kilometer in all of Europe? If that doesn’t tickle a foodie’s fancy I don’t know what will. AND they’re not just known for their fine dining options. Pintxos (pronounced peen-cho) are small bar snacks, similar to tapas, that are typically skewered to a piece of bread with a toothpick. These tasty treats are a Basque staple. I wouldn’t blame you for finding yourself with a stuffed stomach and a pile of 25 toothpicks after enjoying your very own mini Basque buffet.
Experience
Volcano Boarding on Cerro Negro in León, Nicaragua
I’ll be honest, I didn’t even know these two words could coexist together but here we are and I, for one, am here for it. Now if you’re going to do this, you know the drill—please partake in reckless activities responsibly. Choose a reputable company that provides all the necessary gear and have yourself a once in a lifetime experience. One company to look at is Volcano Day. They are the only tour operator in the area that is 100% owned and run by Nicaraguans.
Carry On
Tim Ferris shared this article from Travel & Leisure in his newsletter and it calls out some really cool destinations from around the world—a lot of which I have never even heard of. At the very least, I’d encourage a skim.
