Inaugural Edition - Mexican Party Hostel with a killer mango marg
Welcome, to the very first edition of the Travel Onist newsletter. Please come in and take a seat. Bathrooms are on your left.
Now you may be asking, “Hey T.O., excited to be here and all, but what the ef is an onist?”
Great question. John Koenig describes Onism as “the frustration of being stuck in just one body, that inhabits only one place at a time.” In other words, you sitting at your desk at 1pm on a Wednesday wishing another you was galavanting across Southeast Asia.
As your resident Travel Onist, it is my personal duty to scratch your onist itches (or make them much, much worse…depending on how you look at it).
Here’s what we’re serving up today:
A Mexican Party Hostel with a killer mango marg
A delicious plate of truffles that won’t break the bank
A rare cruise that gets the Travel Onist approval
A travel documentary that pulls on the heart strings
Stay
This cheeky hostel in the heart of Centro Historico in Mexico City will serve you well as a base for your CDMX adventures. The social component is the best part of this place. And if you’re worried about trying to sleep to the sounds of two lost lovers knocking boots in the bunk above you, don’t fret, its one strike and you’re out…if you’re caught. However, if you are highly against being in a crowded city center, then it may not be the place for you.
Great hostels are the bees knees, and if you haven’t stayed in one ever, I don’t necessarily blame you, but I would highly encourage you to change that. Opt for a private room if you like your personal space! You’ll still benefit from the organized activities, amenities, and opportunities to meet people.
Eat, Drink, and Be Merry
Trattoria Lea
This unassuming little beauty of a restaurant in Citta di Castello, Italy straight up ruined my life. I don’t know that I’ll ever have better food than I had here. There’s something about a plate full of pasta with so much truffle that you can’t see the pasta, that makes me want to leave the US forever…could be the fact that I live in the US food mecca and pay 4x as much for lesser pasta, but hey, no love lost NYC 😘.
Experience
If you’re looking for an experience that will make you cry from both the natural beauty and the hit to your bank account, then check out Swan Hellenic’s Antarctic Cruises. They offer other destinations, but if you’re interested in a cruise anywhere outside of the north or south poles, you probably shouldn’t be reading this newsletter.
Carry On
Travel Documentary Highlight—The Last Tourist
If there’s one thing we do not approve of here at Travel Onist, it’s acting like a touron (tourist + moron, get with the program). The Last Tourist outlines all the reasons the travel industry has lost its way. While disturbing at times, it’s a must-watch for anyone who values the experience of travel and wants to ensure that they do not negatively impact the people and places they interact with on their journey.
