plus sibling trip to Seattle and this is water

Happy T.O. day!

Welcome to Travel Onist featuring travel stories, personal growth reflections, and inspiring content.

Here’s what’s on the itinerary today:

Travel: Sibling trip to Seattle

Weekly Write-Up: Looking for a way of life

Content Recommendation: This is water

Travel

The Pacific Northwest is one of my favorite places on earth.

The lush vegetation, mountain views, and proximity to water make the region tough to beat.

I spent this past weekend in Seattle with my sisters.

It was lovely.

Quality time with quality people in a quality place.

It was a lot of travel for a 48-hour trip, but it was more than worth it.

As we get older, we don’t see each other as much. And it’s important to take advantage of the opportunities we have.

We spent a good portion of the time helping my youngest sister move. With any other group, that may have been a task from hell.

But we managed to enjoy our time.

We did more than that though, we ate great food, caught some great views, got some puppy love, and shared plenty of laughs.

It’s fun to just be silly with your people.

Siblings bring out our inner child. That’s something I never want to lose and I’m grateful to feel it reignited when we reunite.

My trip ended with the highlight — A seafood dinner at Ray’s on the water with a beautiful view, followed by a walk along the beach.

Until the next meeting of the minds. ❤️❤️

Weekly Write-up

In one of the newsletters I consistently read (linked here), I came across this quote:

"But beware of looking for goals: look for a way of life. Decide how you want to live and then see what you can do to make a living WITHIN that way of life."

— Hunter S. Thompson

Not only did this resonate with me, but it linked back to an earlier piece of writing I did around rethinking goals.

I’ve oriented my life to check the “make money” box first, thinking I would be free to explore what I’d like to do with my life in my free time.

This quote flips that thinking on its head.

We may not all have that luxury, but it is something to strive for.

As I mentioned last week, I’ve been at a crossroads of sorts with my content. I’ve been looking for a subject area that is deeply personal to me, permeates through all areas of my life, and something that would be helpful to my audience.

And I think I’ve found just that.

I plan to begin publishing more content around this concept of “lifestyle design” — the idea of intentional living, or constructing a life that is authentic to you.

The format and name of this weekly email will likely stay the same for a while as I play with this new subject.

I look forward to sharing it with you all.

In 2005, David Foster Wallace delivered his now famous commencement speech to the graduates of Kenyon College titled “This is Water.” This video is a dramatized excerpt from the speech. It is only 10 minutes and is an excellent reminder that choice is our superpower.
