Lifestyle Design: Experimenting with life

Weekly Write-up: I’m back in the Mountain West

What I’m learning: The most important question of your life

Lifestyle Design

I’ve stumbled across a process worth repeating — 2-year experiments.

When I started my weekly email, I aimed to see it through for 2 years. I’m 14 months in and it’s amazing to see what has come from it already.

Prior to that, my business partner Nic and I built a residential home cleaning business in Charlotte — a project that from inception to close took about two years as well.

Both projects came from a choice to act on a desire for change. Each was selected based on a hypothesis that they would be worthwhile uses of time regardless of the outcome (inspired by Tim Ferriss).

So far, those hypotheses have proved true. It got me thinking, I’d like to keep this momentum going, expanding the practice beyond just work.

There’s a common adage that takes multiple forms, the key point being we tend to overestimate what we can do in the short term while underestimating what we can do in the long term.

These two-year experiments seem to be great tools for committing to long-term progress. The window is long enough to create a disciplined habit, understand if it’s a fit, and build a new skill, but short enough to provide a chance for turnover and keep things fresh.

I’ll be on the lookout for my next 2-year experiment. Perhaps that will coincide with a move abroad. 🤔

What do you think of this concept? Have you tried anything similar?

Weekly Write-up

And just like that, I’m back in the Mountain West, a place that is slowly becoming one of my favorite regions of the world.

This time, I’m here with some friends. We’re planning to catch up, slow down, and explore the nature around us.

After a busy, but mostly city-based summer, it’s been wonderful to be back on the road exploring new places over the last few weeks.

Back-to-back travel can be tough. It’s hard to keep a routine and homesickness inevitably creeps in.

But for the time being, I’d like to embrace the practice of breaking routine and enjoy the new perspectives and ideas that come with it.

What I’m Learning

“What pain do you want in your life? What are you willing to struggle for?”

— Mark Manson

Jerry Seinfeld once said, “Your blessing in life is when you find the torture you’re comfortable with.” This piece from Mark Manson is a beautiful explanation of how this discovery can lead to a more meaningful life.
