The Best Breakfast Sandwich on the Planet

Happy Friday and welcome to Travel Onist, a weekly email that aims to inspire your next trip!

I have a new addition for you all this week. I’ll be kicking off the email with a travel quote. Reply “More” if you’d like this to be a regular thing!

"Travel isn't always pretty. It isn't always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that's okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind."

- Anthony Bourdain

Here’s what’s on the itinerary today:

A colorful ride on an ancient Aztec waterway

Stay in Aix-en-Provence

A guest recommendation hot off the press! This one is thanks to Caroline.

This family-operated 3-suite Bed and Breakfast offers an intimate and authentic Provençal experience. The property is just minutes from the town center, but feels as if you are alone in the French countryside. The hosts live on site in the main house, and prepare a true French feast each morning for the guests. Olive trees surround the 10-acre property and the pool allows for an break from the summer heat of southern France. If you are looking for a serene escape on your trip to Aix-en-Provence, this BnB is for you.

Pro tip: Make sure your taxi drives you up to the front of the property, otherwise, you may be in for a long sweaty walk. 🥵

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry in New York

Home to the best breakfast sandwich on the planet, this family-owned Jewish deli is one of my favorite go-to’s in the city. The space itself is small, so if you can’t find a seat, just venture down the street to McCarren Park to enjoy your food, assuming the weather is nice of course. Now onto the important stuff…the food 😋.

Given the email subject line, you’re probably asking, T.O. “What on earth could be the best breakfast sandwich on the planet? Lemme guess… it’s gotta involve one of those bagels you New Yorkers are always raving about.” Wrong 😊. Although you can order the delectable pastrami, egg, and cheese on a bagel, I would STRONGLY encourage you to opt for their signature challah roll. I’m telling you this combination is unmatched!

If you’ve got an eating buddy or two to share with, I’d recommend your next choice be the heirloom tomato on a pumpernickel everything bagel. This option is best in the summer months when tomatoes are in season, but in my humble opinion, it slaps year-round. Rest assured, although I shared my favorites, this place does it all VERY well. You won’t go wrong deviating from my pre-prescribed menu… even though I’d encourage you not to.

Experience in Mexico City

Xochimilco - Mexico City, Mexico

If any of you have been to Mexico City, or have had friends visit, these colorful boats might look a bit familiar. The canals of Xochimilco are what remains of the vast water transport system built by the Aztecs.

Today? Well, today these colorful boats transport drunk tourists through the canals. In all seriousness, it is a great time and definitely a unique experience given the history. You can expect to pay about 600 pesos for one hour on the boat and it will fit roughly 20 people—a pretty great deal if you ask me. It is BYOB, but there are various merchants that sell food, drinks, and souvenirs along the way.

Carry On

Unfortunately, gone are the days when U.S. based travelers and others can freely jaunt over to Europe without announcing your arrival ahead of time. Starting in 2024, travelers will need to apply through the European Travel Information and Authorization System before they go. The good news is, accepted applications will be good for 3 years, or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner. Check out the link to read all the details.
