Australia's Greatest Road Trip
Happy Friday and happy T.O. day from me to you. As always, I’m here to bring you the best travel experiences from around the world. Think of me as your virtual almanac…but with a lot more personality and a lot less to read. 🤗
“If I'm an advocate for anything, it's to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else's shoes or at least eat their food, it's a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move."
Here’s what’s on tap today:
Stay in Bern, Switzerland
Warning: You’ll likely find Switzerland to be very nice but very expensive.
Bern is one of the few cities I’ve traveled to for which I had high expectations and was still pleasantly surprised. This Airbnb is part of the reason. Centrally located right on the edge of Bern’s old town, it is less than a 10-minute walk from the train station. Even though we were in a pretty highly trafficked area, the place was quiet — we found all of Switzerland to be satisfyingly quiet. 😌
We had access to the sauna and pool in the basement as part of our stay. As a multi-use space, this part of the building can be hectic during the day, but it was just us at night, which was lovely. It was an amazing place to spend a night in Switzerland’s capital.
Eat, Drink, and Be Merry in Perledo, Italy
Another Italian meal to add to my list of bests…
This family-run gem has a beautiful aesthetic to match the delicious food. Tucked away down an alley and around the corner in the small village of Perledo, you’ll walk down a lantern-lit, stone stairway to find a dining area with no more than 5 tables. The small, candlelit interior makes for a cozy and intimate environment to enjoy the wonderful food. The menu is limited and seasonal, which makes ordering easy, and EVERY plate was excellent.
We enjoyed a quick starter, compliments of the chef, followed by a pumpkin purée topped with egg, a plate of thinly sliced venison, pasta with a hearty ragu, and fish from Lake Como. We left with full stomachs and immense gratitude for the experience.
S/o to Silvana, our Airbnb host from last week’s letter for hooking us up with the reservation!
Experience in Victoria, Australia
For my readers who enjoy a nice road trip, there may not be a better place than Australia’s Great Ocean Road. Stretching 150 miles along the country’s south-eastern coast, the drive takes roughly 10 hours from end to end. Plan 2-4 days to allow yourself plenty of time to take in the gorgeous beaches, abundant wildlife, and cute towns along the way.
You’ll see sights such as the Twelve Apostles rock formation, and likely some wild kangaroos and koalas as well. 🦘
Carry On
City guide #3 comes in with the help of readers Nic and Ben, who were kind enough to accompany me on this quick trip. We had a blast and packed a ton into 3 days. Montreal is a charming and unique city that is a great weekend escape for any friends in the Northeast US.
